~ Cara ~

Sissy’s been giving me attitude for days. Not overtly. No way Bob would have that. The accidental shoulder bumps, the resentful silent treatments, the pointed, contemptuous sneers aimed my way whenever I’m anywhere near her vicinity were sure giveaways. When I asked Jenny if she noticed anything different about Sissy, she only shrugged and admitted she didn’t really talk to her.

Ahmad, on the other hand, is darting wary looks her way. “Probably had another fight with her boyfriend,” he observes on the sly, loading two plates with a healthy slice of lemon merengue. “Been cranky for days. Thought she was going to poke my eye out with a toothpick yesterday when I mentioned one of her tables was looking for her.”

“I think she’s mad at me,” I confess quietly without looking at him, the cheery holiday tune from the mounted speakers nearly masking my voice.

He turns away to deliver the order, but not before he tips over to grouse his parting shot. “I think she’s mad at the world, but you are an easier target. I’d stir clear of her if I were you.”

Not that simple, considering the diner isn’t all that big.

I can’t read minds, but I’m pretty sure she’s upset with me over Damian, not that I did anything to encourage what’s happening between us. Damian has a mind of his own, and when it’s made up, nothing would deter him.

The mere thought of him has my breathing expanding, my heartbeats escalating. Like him, his tactics to convince me falls under the unconventional. As soon as I walked through the door the other night, Mrs. Fernandez rushed to me with a pretty giftwrapped box. I figured flowers or candies, but it was neither.

Inside the swanky box, artfully wrapped in thick, lovely tissue paper, was a pair of shoes.

Did he get me sparkling heels? A pair of stylish boots? Of course not. He knew that wouldn’t get my heart dancing the way it did.

They were walking shoes, butter-soft leather and oh-so-pretty. Mrs. Fernandez’s vicarious excitement deflated at the sight, but they were perfect. I immediately tried them on, disappointed when I had to take them off at night. Practical and cute, like floating on a cloud all day.

My socked toes wiggle gratefully in them now.

Mrs. Fernandez’s enthusiasm revived the next morning when two more boxes arrived. This time she gasped at the sight of the gorgeous black dress and heels. I wore them that night to dinner with him. The stunned-speechless look on his face was worth every brutal pinch of my toes.

We chatted the whole time during the meal. He made a few humorous comments that tickled me, told me how stunning I was throughout the night, but I was really hoping-waiting-for him to kiss me like he did in the car, but he didn’t, not even when he walked me back to the front door of my home. Instead, all I got was an unfussy brush of his mouth on my temple and an order to get some rest.
